Astigmatism

Astigmatism is an eye defect in which the cornea of an eye has an irregular shape causing blurred vision.

Types of astigmatism

  1. Corneal Astigmatism: Here, Cornea has unequal curvatures in different meridians.
  2. Lenticular Astigmatism: Here, irregularities are in the shape of the eye not in the cornea.

Symptoms of Astigmatism

  • Eye strain
  • Headaches
  • Squinting
  • Difficulty in seeing at night
  • Double vision
  • Blurred vision

Factors responsible for Astigmatism

  • Irregular shape of cornea: The cornea may be of different shape by birth. Hence, uneven curvature can cause astigmatism.
  • Premature birth: Those kids born premature, may experience chances of astigmatism.
  • Certain Health Conditions: Diseases like diabetes contribute change in the cornea’s shape.
  • Eyelid pressure:  Excessive pressure on eyelids can influence the shape of the cornea.
  • Genetics: Any person with a family history of Astigmatism is more likely develop the same.  
  • Keratoconus: It’s an eye disorder in which the cornea of an eye becomes thinner and then conical leading to astigmatism.

  • Eye protection: Wear good quality eye wear so that it can prevent trauma that might cause changes in cornea.
  • Eye hygiene: Always wash hands properly before touching eyes and try to maintain good hygiene.
  • Avoid smoking: Eye diseases are also the reason for smoking. So, quit it.
  • Take breaks from screen time: Use the 20-20-20 rule.
  • Proper contact lens care: Follow proper hygiene and instructions given by an eye care professional, if wearing contact lens.
